It is always important to do your homework when seeking a qualified sitter for your family. Whether you are looking for a night out, a part-time sitter or a full-time sitter, you should use the following checklist.
 
Assess your need: Research the appropriate pay based on your needs, number of children and sitter experience and set a rate per hour or per day.
 
Advertise for sitters in multiple locations.
 
Conduct interviews with all qualified applicants.
 
Verify reliability with the sitter's most recent employers.
 
Check childcare references with at least 3 families the sitter has worked.
 
Perform a thorough background screening. Make sure to find a reputable background screening company that screens each applicants personal character history, address history, criminal and civil records, as well as credit history records.
 
Whether your needs are sporadic or on a regular basis, verify with your ed sitters that their schedule will work with your specific needs.
 
Compile a list of approved sitters and this list as your needs change.
 
Update this list on a regular basis as your sitter's schedules will change.
 
Arrange to have backup care available when your sitter is sick.
